Soldering Station

Today I placed an order for a 100′ spool of balanced audio cable and a number of connectors. I want to be able to make cables and adapters in-house rather than purchase them. I’m doing this for 2 main reasons. The first of which being, I can save money. Secondly, I’m tired of trying to make pre-determined cable lengths work when it is clear that I need a more custom length. That being said, I spent a few hours organizing the studio workshop today in preparation for the new cable-making workload. After doing some research I think I have a fairly good understanding about how to assemble the various cables and connectors that I will be using on a regular basis.

After watching a number of video tutorials on how to make audio cables I began to make mental notes on how to set up my work space. I have a plethora of timber in the garage so I decided to use some to create a soldering station. This is the 80% finished product. I still have to install a few metal plates. Alas, it’s not going to win any beauty contests but it’s ultra functional.

Gatlinburg 2011

Gatlinburg Vacation 2011

My fiance and I decided that we needed to get away for the weekend so we took a trip down to one of our favorite vacation spots… Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It’s such an ideal place to relax. It’s tucked away in the smoky mountains and is such a quiet and relaxing place. Anyway, sometimes it’s just good to get away and mix things up from time to time. This is our second trip to Gatlinburg as a couple. We love this place. This particular trip was a bit different because we were meeting up with my Uncle Terry and his son, Braydon. They had booked a room at the River Lodge for the week and invited us to come down and share the room. Of course, we couldn’t refuse. I mean, we love it there!

While we were in Gatlinburg, we did a little bit of everything. We shopped, hiked, saw some of the sights, visited one of the largest knife shops in the US, ate some food, bought some moonshine, and did some good old fashioned hanging out. We had a great time. It was a much needed reprieve from our busy work schedules. Being that we’re both free-lance, we spend a lot of our free time working. It takes a lot out of us.

By the way, these amazing pictures were taken by my beautiful fiance, Lauren. You can check out more of her work by visiting her blog!

New Pedal for the Collection

Akai Deep Impact SB1This pedal has been on my list of “must-have-pedals” from the moment I first heard demos of it via youtube videos. Alas, I have never been able to purchase one on eBay because they are either selling for $$$$$$$$$$ or the auctions are over within minutes of starting. These are incredibly rare synth pedals; highly sought after by bassists. Ah well, my search is over. At long last, I now possess an Akai Deep Impact SB1. It is magnificent. This is good news for a number of reasons. The first of which being, I now own this pedal and can use it whenever I want!!!!! Secondly, it’s become assimilated into my recording studio and will be made available to the musicians recording with me!

So yeah, fuck all of this noise. I’m going to get back to turning knobs.

Afternoon at Navy Pier

Lauren and I made a trip up to Chicago this week to retrieve the few things that I left behind during my brief stay in Chicago for my internship at Electrical Audio. Just a few little things… Headphones, portable recording rig, and a few books. We were only planning on staying in Chicago for 2 days so we were determined to make the most of it. Despite not having an itinerary, we managed to have a good time.o Navy Pier and put on our tourist hats. As we were getting ready to leave Chicago, Lauren decided that she wanted to see the lake and we made a last-minute decision to drive t

Navy Pier

The transformation into tourist-mode is quite easy. You just walk around aimlessly and take pictures of things. Oh, and you have to spend money on things that you normally would not. For instance, you have to buy Italian Ice. It is imperative that you do this.

Italian Ice

While munching on Italian Ice, we booked a boat tour of the Chicago skyline so that we could acquire even more tourist-points. Just so you know, tourist-points are similar to punk-rock-points only they aren’t punk-rock. The boat ride was pretty awesome. The lake breeze was a nice reprieve from the heat and humidity.

Boat Tour

Oh, did I mention we saw a light house? Because we did.

Light House

After the boat ride, we walked to the end of the pier and saw the ferris wheel. I hate heights but ended up conquering my fear so that Lauren could have a good time. It wasn’t so bad. The view was pretty good. I got a little nervous when the radio in our gondola started to short out.

Ferris Wheel

After we exited the ferris wheel, we walked directly towards a snack booth so that we could consume corn-on-the-cob-on-a-stick. It was delicious. Look at Lauren chomp into this corn!

So yeah, that concludes our little trip to Navy Pier.
